About me

imageProfessionally, I am an academic, researcher and higher education consultant, with a background in the performing and visual arts. Currently I am Senior Consultant (Higher Education) at Ciel Associates and a Visiting Professor at Middlesex University in London and Rose Bruford College in Kent. Previously I was the Higher Education Academy’s UK Lead for Dance, Drama and Music in higher education, supporting and enhancing learning and teaching in those disciplines in universities and colleges across the UK. I am a regular speaker at conferences and seminars, and undertake consultancy work.

My research is mainly in the fields of creativity, assessment and curriculum design, though I also write about other issues in higher education.

I tweet professionally at @cieleducation, and everything else at @drpaulkleiman.

On a more personal note: I am married, with two, now adult, children: one’s a musician (singer/songwriter) and music teacher in a secondary school in Cornwall, and the other graduated in 2014 and is working in London in the online gaming industry.  Their very different journeys through higher education (Dartington College of Arts and University of Sheffield) gave me an interesting perspective on my day job.

Our first child died at birth in 1990, and both my wife Jo and I are active in supporting bereaved parents through the charity Sands http://www.uk-sands.org/. We have a bonker Lakeland Terrrier called Bertie and a daft black and white cat called Archie. We also own an old narrowboat called Québec to which we escape most weekends.
